Support FAQ: What is the difference between a lawyer and an attorney?

  • Lawyer is a general term for someone who has studied law. This could include someone who has graduated from law school but hasn’t taken the bar exam, or someone who works in a legal field but doesn’t provide legal advice.

  • Attorney is a lawyer who has been licensed to practice law in a specific jurisdiction. This means they have passed the bar exam and are authorized to represent clients in court, give legal advice, and draft legal documents.

So, all attorneys are lawyers, but not all lawyers are attorneys.
