Overview
A student visa is a unique approval provided by a country to enable foreign citizens to enter and reside for the purpose of studying at a recognized educational institution. This visa is not the same as citizenship and comes with specific rules that students must follow to keep their visa status.

Guidelines for Student Visa
A person from another country who wants to come to the United States usually needs to first get a visa. They can get either a nonimmigrant visa for short-term stays or an immigrant visa for long-term stays. An official student visa is needed to go to school in the US. An F or M visa is needed depending on the type of school you want to attend and the course you are taking.
Students cannot travel on the Visa Waiver Program or with Visitor Visas
If you want to study in the US, you need a F or M student visa. Foreigners who come to the US on a guest (B) visa or through the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are not allowed to study, unless it is for fun and not for credit as part of a tourist trip. Read more about the VWP at Visa Waiver Program.
For short periods of recreational study, a Visitor (B) visa may be appropriate
People with a visitor (B) visa can take a short course for fun, but not to get credit toward a degree or academic award. Find out more about visitor visas.
On a visitor (B) visa, you can’t study for a degree or license that can be given in the U.S., even if it’s just for a short time. For instance, a student in an online learning program that needs to spend some time on the school’s U.S. campus must get a student (F or M) visa before coming to the U.S.
How to Apply for a Student Visa?
To apply for a student visa, first, get accepted by a school in the country you want to study in. Then, fill out the visa application form and gather the needed documents, like your passport and acceptance letter. Pay any fees required and submit your application. If necessary, attend an interview and provide biometric data. Wait for your application to be processed, and once approved, you’ll receive your visa. Then, you can make travel plans and follow any rules when you arrive in the country.

Application Type
You can apply for two types of visas online:
- First Time (New): If you do not have a valid Pakistan visa, you can apply for a new one.
- Extension: If you have a valid Pakistan visa and are living in Pakistan, you can ask for a visa extension.
Eligibility
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the country you’re applying to study in. This may include requirements related to enrollment in a recognized educational institution, proof of financial means, proficiency in the language of instruction, and medical examinations.

Duration and Validity
Understand the duration of the student visa you’re applying for and its validity period. Some visas are issued for the duration of the academic program, while others may have shorter validity periods requiring renewal or extension.
A Study Visa is granted for 2 years
In case of extension, please make sure that you have a valid Pakistani Visa and are residing in Pakistan as well.
Processing Time
Be aware of the processing time for student visa applications, as this can vary depending on the country and individual circumstances. It’s advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel date to allow for any delays in processing.
Issuance of Visa is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan
- 4 Weeks (Working Days – First Time Entry)
- 4 Weeks (Working Days – Visa Extension)
Note: The set processing time will apply again if the application is sent back to the applicant for review. The new processing time will begin on the date the application is sent back for review. Applications will be thrown out if the candidate doesn’t resubmit them within seven 7 days of the date they were sent for review.

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.
Student Visa Fee
Student visa application fee (Subclass 500) is $630 for a primary applicant from 1st of July 2021. Some other fees may occur: For an additional applicant who is 18 years and it is included within the same student visa application, there is an additional applicant charge $470.
The student visa fee varies depending on the country you are applying to. Here are some examples:
United Kingdom: £490 to apply for a Student visa from outside the UK, and £490 to extend or switch to a Student visa from inside the UK.
United States: $160 application fee, a $350 SEVIS fee for F and M visa applications, and a $220 fee for most J Visa applications.
Australia: AUD$710 for the main applicant.
